The impact of cooler weather on motorcycling

On Behalf of Law Office of W. Daniel Grist, PLLC | Sep 30, 2020 | Motorcycle Accidents |

Motorcycling provides convenient transportation and adventurous travel for many enthusiasts in North Carolina, even as the temperatures drop and winter approaches. People who desire to continue riding during wintertime would benefit from understanding the impact of cooler weather on their decision so they can optimize their safety.

Motorcyclists who prioritize preparing for cooler temperatures and inclement weather can have more control over their safety and well-being.

Getting the bike winter-ready

Just like anything else that people anticipate using during the wintertime, their motorcycle requires a bit of winterization to remain in optimal riding conditions for the elements. People can preserve the condition and operation of their motorcycle, according to BikeBandit, by doing things like lubing moving parts, checking tires for wear and tear, refilling fluids and changing oil.

Should they choose to continue riding as the weather cools off, a well-maintained bike will perform better and can respond more effectively to the conditions outside. If the weather reaches the point where riding is no longer safe, people should properly store their bike and perform a thorough assessment of its condition before riding it again the following spring.

Riding in the wintertime

While it is not uncommon to see a few motorcyclists out riding despite the dropping temperatures, experts recommend not riding once the snow begins to fall. However, before it reaches that point, Forbes suggests a few other safety tips for people to be aware of including the following:

  • Cooler temperatures impact tire heat and lessen traction. This influences control and requires motorcyclists to practice vigilance in riding carefully and checking the pressure on their tires more frequently.
  • Riding without proper clothing is not only cold but very dangerous. People should wear approved pants, gloves, boots, a jacket and a helmet for ample protection in an accident.

People should also decrease their speed when the ground is visibly wet and slippery. Practicing extra caution may enable them to manage risks and recognize hazards with precision and confidence.
